what's a farce?

March 27 is world theatre day

In theatre, the term is derived from the French word for “stuffing,” and was used to describe comic bits inserted (“stuffed”) between scenes in religious plays. Farce emerged as its own theatre form in France in the 15^th century. Today, this absurd type of exaggerated comedy typically includes:

Fast-paced action – Quick entrances, exits, and misunderstandings drive the plot.
Physical comedy (slapstick) – Characters trip, fall, and get into ridiculous situations.
Mistaken identities & disguises – Characters are often confused for someone else.
Exaggerated characters – Personalities are extreme, and their reactions are over-the-top.
Absurd situations – The plot is filled with unlikely coincidences and chaos.
